Fire Fighter Academy Graduation Backyard Celebration

Checking out one of the first posts on my blog brings up all kinds of nostalgia and pride. This one was such a special occasion, celebrating a big milestone for my dad—a guy who's always surprising us with his drive to tackle new hobbies and adventures. The original post was just photos, but now I feel like adding some words to really capture what that day was all about.

Celebrating an Extraordinary Achievement 

We threw a fun graduation celebration in our backyard for my dad, Bob Benson, who made history as the oldest graduate from the Monmouth County fire academy. The vibe was all about joy and laughter and fit of family silliness.

My dad was a real-life action hero—scuba instructor, master carpenter, curling coach, cyclist, volleyball player and fireman. He was the king of trying new things and always pushed us to dive into the unknown. His fire academy adventure was just another chapter in his book of “it’s-never-too-late” stories.

At each place setting was a playful touch—a toy firefighter helmet. These helmets weren't just decorative; they were an invitation to join in the fun and embrace the spirit of adventure.

These helmets found their purpose beyond mere decoration, becoming the uniform for our family pool volleyball game.

The tablecloth was a heavy muslin, with reflective tape running down the center, mimicking the design of a firefighter's jacket.

Looking back at these photos, I'm so grateful I got to share this experience with my dad. At first, writing about it felt dark, but it’s been an amazing journey that’s helped me grow. Even though he passed away in 2017, my dad’s adventurous spirit lives on, inspiring me and everyone who knew him to try new things.

I love celebrating my dad’s incredible journey on this planet. He was happiest as both a student and teacher. He loved to learn and share his knowledge. His story is all about passion, perseverance, and the bravery to try something new, no matter your age.

I’m so proud to have shared this time with him and to share it with you now. Thanks for joining me in honoring Bob Benson—a true inspiration to us all.

A term which is frequently used by cyclists to indicate respect for another's achievements. By saying "chapeau", which literally means "hat", the rider is doffing his cap to a colleague for a good day's riding.
